"I have completed a monument more lasting than bronze […] I shall continue to grow, fresh with the praise of posterity" Horace (Odes [Carmina], III, 33)

The news leaked in an op-ed on Pan-Africanism published in Africultures at the end of last March. It's now absolutely official, the Cameroonian press has just confirmed: Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is the new Winner of the Grand Prix des Mécènes. The prize will be awarded April 23 at the French Institute of Cameroon in Yaoundé. History teaches us quite clearly that the greatness of a man is measured not only by his fortune or power, but also by his wisdom and, especially, by the number of years he will be remembered as a wise man. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is a great man; winner of the Grand Prix des Mécènes 2018, posterity will remember him for a long time. He succeeds late Seydou Badian Kouyaté, who in turn succeeded Bernard Dadié, another baobab of African literature who passed away on March 9. Two years earlier to the day, on March 9, 2017, he was awarded the Grand Prix des Mécènes in Yaoundé, Cameroon. RIP. We won't forget.
