America's Deputy Ambassador Michael Gonzalez says books are the hidden treasure for every nation.
Gonzalez made the remarks during the handover of 554 science and literature books to Sadzi Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Zomba.
He said individuals and nations that aspire to become developed have intimate relationship with books.
"When you are reading and studying, you are actually gaining new knowledge and experience that enables you to focus on the right path in achieving one thing," he said.
Gonzalez said his office decided to donate the books to the school due to the self-help spirit that the teachers and parents have.
"We learnt that the school administration and the parents constructed a library despite having no books. It pleased us to give them this consignment of books to boost the reading and studying culture among students," he said.
Head teacher Fidelis Makaula hailed the American Embassy for the timely intervention.
"We will use these books as a weapon for uprooting ignorance among the learners development that will induce socio – economic development of the country," he said.
Principal education planning officer for the South Eastern Education Division (Seed) Mc Donald Kuse said the role that the American Embassy has played in the donation of books to the school complements government's efforts towards quality education in the country.
