Destyne Butler grew up on the infamous Southside of Chicago between poverty, drugs, and gang violence. His boxing talent as a kid was fostered by his dad. He gets arrested as he turned 18. The father figure is all that remains for him in the boot camp he is sent to.

Destyne Butler Jr. is 18 years old. He is housed in Chicago in a correctional facility for juvenile offenders for dealing drugs. As a child, Destyne wanted to be a boxer. His father gave him that idea. Now Destyne often wonders why he didn't pursue that dream. And so Destyne writes a letter to his father. To share his thoughts, to apologize - and to say that he loves his father, no matter what.

FATHER'S DAY, the new film by director André Hörmann, impresses with its clarity and reduction to the protagonist Destyne Butler Jr. The clever choice on the sound level to let Destyne speak only through the letter to his father lets the viewer dive deeper into the young man's thoughts and makes the harshness of the external conditions even more palpable. The flashback showing Destyne as a boy taking boxing lessons adds another touching dimension to the story. And the more personal the short documentary becomes, the more the social circumstances and oppressive reality in the U.S. become apparent. Sein Vater hat ihn auf diese Idee gebracht. Nun fragt sich Destyne oft, warum er diesen Traum nicht weiter verfolgte. Und so schreibt Destyne seinem Vater einen Brief. Um seine Gedanken mitzuteilen, sich zu entschuldigen - und um zu sagen, dass er seinen Vater liebt, egal was passiert.
FATHER'S DAY, der neue Film von Regisseur André Hörmann, beeindruckt durch seine Klarheit und Reduziertheit auf den Protagonistien Destyne Butler Jr.. Die kluge Wahl auf der Tonebene, Destyne nur durch den Brief an seinen Vater sprechen zu lassen, lässt den Zuschauer tiefer in die Gedanken des jungen Mannes eintauchen und macht die Härte der äußeren Bedingungen noch stärker spürbar. Durch den Flashback, der Destyne als Jungen beim Boxunterricht zeigt, erhält die Geschichte eine weitere berührende Dimension. Und je persönlicher der Kurzdokumentarfilm wird, desto mehr werden auch die gesellschaftlichen Umstände und die bedrückende Realität in den USA deutlich.
