A 10 day workshop for building hybrid music instruments to perform on the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts 2014.
 
This workshop aims to build new musical interfaces on the basis of recycled electronic devices sourced from Ugandan markets which are combined with open-source mini- computing platforms to form 'hybrid' instruments. Through the combination of analog and digital technologies new sound-worlds of electronic sounds will be explored, as well as new strategies for musical interaction and improvisation in the group.
The  outcome  is  a  performance  and/or  sound  installation  during  the  Bayimba
International Festival of the Arts on 19th to 21st September 2014.
 
Requirements to participate
Interest in music and technology
Experience of using computers and electronic instruments for music production (helpful)
Basic familiarity with audio technology or any programming language (helpful)
Time and commitment to participate between the 10th September and 21st September 2014
(schedule will be communicated after selection of participants)
A laptop or smartphone (helpful, software will be provided)

Jonas Hummel is a musician, electronic artist and sound-/video engineer from Germany working with various
multimedia technologies for almost a decade. Recently, he started working with embedded computer systems
and has taught workshops in Germany and China. Since 2012, he is working on a PhD thesis on 'the uses of laptop
computers in improvised music performances, from solistic to collaborative group settings'.
