Life By The Fingertips is a 1982 documentary film by Jean-Paul Janssen, featuring Patrick Edlinger fully living his passion: climbing, which he practices solo, meaning without a rope or any form of protection.
The film begins with a solo sea crossing session at the Piade site near Toulon. In the second part, Patrick Edlinger trains in Buoux before soloing a multi-pitch route at this now-famous climbing site. This legendary film, in more ways than one, is considered the first climbing film, meaning that climbing is an activity in itself and not a means of preparing for mountaineering.
Its media success was such that it propelled Patrick Edlinger to global stardom and, more importantly, introduced climbing to the general public. It was even nominated for a César Award for Best Documentary Short Film.
