DRIVING WITH FANON is more of a visual jazz improvisation than a documentary. An accident on the way to a movie, quite literally, as director Steve Kwena Mokewena's car crash interrupts his original plans. The chaotic public aggression that is unleashed suddenly becomes the subject of this inspired freeform aesthetic meditation on postcolonial Africa. Images and sound unfold into a dub remix of the radical philosophies of Frantz Fanon and Steve Biko, immersing us in the beauty and sadness of thinking, and of being African.
