Bogota, April 9, 1948. In spite of strong social tensions, the Colombian capital welcomes the 9th Pan-American Conference. The international press had just met with the American Secretary of State George Marshall, who seemed to be surprised by the immense popularity enjoyed by Jorge Elicier Gaitan, leader of the opposition and fierce opponent of the Colombian oligarchy: his theses seriously threatened the strategic interests of the USA in the region. Around 1 pm, as the popular leader is assassinated, like the hopes of a better life of the most destitute Colombians. But those who eliminated him will go further: they manipulate the crowd and have the straw man who fired the shots lynched on the spot. His body will be dragged to the presidential palace, as if the crowd knew exactly where the real masterminds of the assassination were. Gaitan's supporters went on a rampage for 48 hours, leaving the city center in ruins: nearly 5,000 people were killed in this merciless confrontation with the police. The survivors retreated to the mountains. These rebels will be the first forces of what will become the guerrilla. However, to this day, no serious investigation has been carried out to elucidate this assassination: all attempts have led to the contrary, to obscure it even more. More than 50 years of civil war were to follow, and to this day, no one has found a way to effectively heal this deep wound in Colombia's collective unconscious.
