In 1888, the African interior was terra incognita for Europeans.
With the scientific and geographical curiosity of the century of enlightenment, a new type of adventurer emerged: the explorer, the pioneer in unknown lands, whose purpose was to inform his contemporaries about the state of the world while reinforcing the idea of white supremacy over uncivilised tribes.
What is particularly striking about the story of these explorers is the way they set off on their own individual expeditions in an age when the major powers were loth to encourage such bold undertakings.
Three of the men who opted for a life of adventure have become legends both in Europe and in Africa: Mungo Park, René Caillé and Heinrich Barth.
