An atypical figure, in Belgium and in the Congo. He was the first Congolese to have pursued advanced studies in Belgium in the 20th century. Appointed agricultural agent, he returned to the Congo as the first black Belgian civil servant. He suffered from exclusion and renounced his career. A volunteer in 1914, he was taken prisoner and spent his captivity in Germany. After the war, he devoted his energy to promoting equality between whites and blacks.
