ZIFF Festival of the Dhow Countries, Zanzibar
ZIFF Festival of the Dhow Countries in Zanzibar -Tanzania from 28 June to 12 July 2003 celebrates the cultures of the Dhow Countries, which share the Indian Ocean basin. These countries include the African continent, the Gulf States, Iran, India, Pakistan and the Indian Ocean Islands. The Zanzibar International Film Festival is the centrepiece of the festival.
Film and video productions can compete for the festival's Dhow Awards. These awards have been named after the Dhow, the ancient sea-going trade vessels powered by the monsoon winds which over centuries, have brought together the peoples of the Indian Ocean region. Dhows have influenced the development, dissemination and unification of cultures in this region The Dhows have in fact shaped the collective memory of the region's people and nurtured their identities. The Dhow is the symbol of the festival.
The ZIFF Festival of the Dhow Countries aims to showcase, celebrate, promote and to develop the shared heritage and cultural products of the Dhow countries. From the vantage point of Zanzibar, the festival provides an opportunity to offer perspectives on contemporary trends in global culture which address some of the defining ideas of the twenty-first century incorporated in the themes of cultural diversity, individual integrity, social justice, women, children, diaspora culture and conservation.
ZIFF invites submissions of film and/or video productions for the festival programme in both competition and non-competition categories.
