During the Tampere Film Festival held in Finland on 10.-14.3 2010, the Tampere Film Festival and reelport have launched a project to digitise all short film submissions in Europe. To this end, Tampere and reelport already digitised more than 3500 film submissions for the Video Library of the Tampere Film Market.

Thousands of DVDs are submitted to short film festivals around the world. They need to be labelled, stored and finally destroyed. If programmers are based elsewhere in the world, DVDs need to be shipped with high costs and loss of time. In the festivals film markets, only one DVD can be watched by one person at a time and huge piles of DVDs need to be searched to find films of interest. And finally, hundreds of thousands of DVDs create waste that pollutes our environment.

The goal of this project is to get rid of DVD screeners in the festival's workflow. Therefore we have decided to digitise all films that are submitted to short film festivals in Europe. Festivals are invited to send their DVDs to Tampere. There they will be digitised. Reelport will then encode the films and make them available for streaming and for download by the participating festivals. By the end of this year, we estimate that more than 10.000 short films will be available for the festivals that participate in the digitisation scheme.

Other festivals are invited to join. Since many festivals share the same submissions, combining the efforts would lower the costs and minimize the efforts for everybody involved.
