The mission of Nuk Bilong Pikinini  is to provide learning opportunities for the most vulnerable children of Papua New Guinea. With the creation of our community based libraries they are hoping to help increase literacy rates in PNG. One word, One page, One book at a time. This charity was created to provide vulnerable children with access to books and foster a love of reading and learning in Papua New Guinea through the introduction of small, sustainable, self contained libraries opened in identified areas of need throughout Papua New Guinea.

The first Buk bilong Pikinini library opened at Port Moresby General Hospital in April 2008, providing new and pre-loved books, educational games and activities, and a selection of craft materials to sick and underprivileged
children. There is a full time librarian in each facility and in most libraries the addition of an assistant to help cope with the growing demand of children who utilize the facilities. They also, where appropriate, employ a guard to secure not only the libraries but ensure the safety of children and staff. Our guards also act as maintenance and general helpers.

Buk bilong Pikinini continues to grow whilst maintaining 10 libraries operating throughout PNG.

Buk bilong Pikinini was founded by Anne-Sophie Hermann and Anna Mukerjee in 2007. In 1974 there were 34 public libraries in Port Moresby and in 2006 there were none. Thus the seed was sown and Buk bilong Pikinini was born out of a desperate need and desire to avail the entire community and it's people to the joys of reading and becoming literate citizens.

It is now also hosting author's and illustrator's seminars.
