Born in France on December 30th, 1970, from parents of Beninese origin, he became known thanks to his role in The Hate (La Haine) by Mathieu Kassovitz. A theater writer, he co-directed one of the sketches of the film Paris la Métisse, Kassovitz. He has directed two short films, Menhir, c'est citer (Menhir is Quote) and Qui se ressemble s'assemble (Quilting Seeds).

Hubert Koundé spent his childhood between France, where he was born, and Benin, where he lived as a young child with his grandparents, between Ouidah and Cotonou, the Beninese capital. Revealed to the general public through Métisse by Mathieu Kassovitz, he gained notoriety for his role in The Hate, with same director, role that earned him a nomination for the 1996 César of Best Male Newcomer at the 21st ceremony of Cesars.
