Paula van der Oest (Netherlands, 1965) won the prestigious Canon Award from the Norwegian Film Academy with Zinderend (1988), her graduation film from the Dutch Film and Television Academy. In 2001 she directed her third feature film, Zus & Zo, aloose adaptation of Chekhov's "The Three Sisters", which became the sixth Dutch film ever to be nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar. She followed this praise with the English fairytale/thriller Moonlight the following year.
