Less expensive Earth

  • Terre moins chère (La)
Type : Film essay

Year of production : 2004
Format : Short
Running time : 10 (in minutes)

The image a little fuzzy, shot from far away, showing bored tourists in a large swimming pool of a hotel located in an Arab country. On the windowpanes of a travel agency in Paris I found this sentence written in large letters "La terre moins chère" ("A less expensive earth"). Through the window, one can see lots of small glasses filled with sand and bearing labels giving the name of the country where the sand was collected.
Yes, when I am an adult, I want to be a tourist, says Fatou Jobe, a pupil of CE2 (i.e. primary classes), from Serrekunda in Gambia. Being an adult is being a tourist and being able to travel around the earth without any visa, without any borders. We are somewhat shocked by the slogan of the Israeli tourist information centre, "Here, nobody is more at home than yourself"; we definitely understand that the invitation does not apply to Palestinians. For some people, earth is priceless.
