PROJECT PRESENTATION
As a child in Bobo-Dioulasso, I had a big dream: to participate in the DJOMELE, the celebration of the lunar new year at the Bobos Mandarê which takes place in the historic district of Dioulassoba. The DJOMELE is best known for the carnival of young girls which sees several hundred of them parade freely and with pride, adorned with beautiful jewelry and dressed in traditional costumes.
Having become an adult and a filmmaker, I wish to fulfill this dream by filming my little sister Naila, doing the DJOMELE in my place. Or Naila is deaf-mute and no member of our family understands sign language. How to explain my project to her and know if she really agrees to participate in it if we cannot exchange on equal terms?
That's why I decided to learn sign language.
MY NIGHT OF THE DJOMÉLÉ thus becomes a gesture towards a sister whom I have long looked at without ever seeing. A gesture to offer us, through the preparation and preparation of this ceremony, a shared space of joy and pride and reconciliation for the whole family.
