Gavin Hood was born in Johannesburg and studied at that city's University of Witwatersrand and at the University of California, Los Angeles. He directed his first short film, The Storekeeper, in 1998. His feature Tsotsi (2005) won the People's Choice Award at the Festival in 2005 and went on to win the Academy Award® for best foreign-language film. His other features are A Reasonable Man (1999), In Desert and Wilderness (2001) and Rendition (2007).
